Asada Mao or Kim Yuna?

I read lots of posts and news about the Asada Mao and Kim Yuna’s rivalry. Some news supports and are at the side of Asada Mao, particularly on Jpop. And most of the Kpop news contain Kim Yuna’s gold medal in the Vancouver, Canada Olympic Games. This thing became interesting for me, since I’m fund of watching skate-offs (though I don’t know them that much).

So who’s a lot better? Asada Mao or Kim Yuna?

It’s hard to decide since they have the same young faces, same great abilities. They’re both popular for being cute and graceful when it comes to figure skating. They’re both teen agers, and what a coincidence, they’re both 19! Can you imagine that? How can such rivalry be this tough?

But this tough comparison between the two have ended within a single game. The all-girl skate-off between Korea and Japan. Korea’s Kim Yuna won against Mao. Here’s the tally sheet, here included also, the bronze medalist from Canada:

Kim Yuna got 4.72 points ahead of Asada Mao, with this absolutely stunning finish:

But whichever your choices are, they’ll still be on equal parts in my heart. And to add up to their tie-ups, well I think, they both got in demand when it comes to advertisements.

Oh Canada Cupcakes

These cupcakes were finished just in time to see the Canadian women’s hockey team take home the GOLD!   GO CANADA!

The recipe for these yummy red velvet cupcakes came from the More from Magnolia Bakery cookbook.  The original recipe was for a layer cake and it made A TON of cupcakes (3.5 dozen!)  The cupcakes are topped with a cream cheese frosting and a red maple leaf.  I adore them.

Red Velvet Cupcakes

  • 3  1/3 cups cake flour (I used all purpose flour and just sifted it a few times)
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temp.
  • 2  1/4 cups sugar
  • 3 large eggs at room temp.
  • 6 tbsp red food colouring (I used red paste food colouring measured into 6 tbsp of water)
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1  1/2 tsp salt
  • 1  1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1  1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1  1/2 tsp baking soda

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line muffin tins with paper liners.

Cream the butter and sugar until it’s light and fluffy (or about 5 minutes)  Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl often.

In another bowl, combine the food colouring, cocoa and vanilla.  Add it to the batter and mix well/

Stir the salt into the buttermilk and add it to the batter alternating with the flour.  Beat after each addition until all of the ingredients are incorporated and scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl with a spatula.

In a small bowl, mix the apple cider vinegar with the baking soda and mix it into the batter until combined.

Scoop batter into lined muffin cups about 1/2 full.

Bake for roughly 20 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched.

Let cool completely before frosting.

frosting

  • 1 1/4 cups unsalted butter
  • 8 oz cream cheese, room temp
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 cups powdered sugar

Beat butter and cream cheese until smooth.  Add the vanilla followed by the powdered sugar (1 cup at a time) and beat until light and fluffy.

Pipe onto cupcakes using a large star tip.

To create the maple leaves, I melted red wilton candy melts in a ziplock freezer bag for about 40 seconds in the microwave and snipped the corner of the bag with scissors creating a piping bag.   I printed some maple leaves to outline and placed the paper under some parchment so I had a pattern to follow.  Pipe the melted chocolate in the desired pattern and let harden.

If a pair of these nice red Canadian Olympic mittens catch your eye you should definitely head over and see Debbie In Nana’s Kitchen because she’s GIVING SOME AWAY!

GO CANADA!

Aboriginal People of Canada Help to Kick off Olympics

When the Winter Olympic Ceremonies in Vancouver began it opened with reverence for history, a history  which begins with the Aboriginal People of Canada.

History

Aboriginal peoples in Canada comprise the First Nations, Inuit and Métis. The descriptors “Indian” and “Eskimo” are falling into disuse. Old Crow Flats and Bluefish Caves are the earliest archaeological sites of human habitation in Canada. The Paleo-Indian Clovis, Plano cultures and Pre-Dorset pre-date American indigenous and Inuit cultures. Projectile point tools, spears, pottery, bangles, chisels and scrapers mark archaeological sites, thus distinguishing cultural periods, traditions and lithic reduction styles. Hundreds of Aboriginal nations evolved trade, spiritual and social hierarchies. The Métis culture of mixed blood originated in the mid-17th century when First Nation and native Inuit married European settlers. The Inuit had more limited interaction with European settlers during that early period. Various laws, treaties, and legislation have been enacted between European immigrants and First Nations across Canada. Aboriginal Right to Self-Government provides opportunity to manage historical, cultural, political, health care and economic control aspects within first people’s communities.- Wikepedia

Olympic Roadtrip: Manitoba

For the next few weeks the eyes of the world will be on Canada as Vancouver, British Columbia plays host to the Winter Olympics. So what better time to take a virtual road trip across this gigantic country and make pit stops in each province to check out some bands that you may or may not have listened to before. Every day (or second day) we’ll look at two bands from each of the 10 Canadian provinces. Buckle in, enjoy the ride, and help support the talented Canadian music scene!

Manitoba

Manitoba is a mystery to me. It is smack dab in the middle of Canada. It is really flat. And it is the only province in Canada that I have not stepped foot in. Two of Canada’s most famous bands that garnered attention not only in Canada, but also internationally, hailed from Manitoba. The Guess Who made waves in both the US and Canada with singles such as American Woman and No Sugar Tonight in the late 60s and 70s. The other famous artist being Neil Young, who will be featured later. If you are from Manitoba or know of awesome artists from Manitoba drop me a line in the comment section.

Band #1 – The Weakerthans – Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Weakerthans are a four piece band fronted by John K. Samson who have a loyal fan base. There songs consist of a blend of folk rock, punk rock, and alternative rock. This collection of styles comes together to create an enjoyable sound. They also know how to put on an entertaining live show as they play these honest tales.

Songs to check out: Night Windows, Our Great City

Band #2 – Neil Young – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Neil Young is an iconic Canadian. At the age of 65 he is still cranking out new tunes and touring. A lot of music has come out of this man, ranging from his solo work to his work with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Crazy Horse. His song Keep on Rocking in the Free World has been covered by countless bands is known by almost anyone who knows anything about music. He has gone through multiple phases, country songs, rock songs, concept albums about an electric car, you name it and he has probably done it. His voice is about as distinguishable as the maple leaf on the Canadian flag and he is one of the most important figures to put Canadian music on the map.

Songs to check out: Four Strong Winds, Harvest Moon, Cowgirl in the Sand, Down By the River

Andrew Koenig is Missing

andrew koenig is missing

Andrew Koenig, actor, producer, and activist, is missing. Last seen in a bakery near Stanley Park in Vancouver on February 14th, he was scheduled to fly home to LA on the 16th, but never checked in for his flight. According to his parents he had been in a depressed state for some time, and they received a letter on the 16th of February that has alarmed them for his safety, because of the state of mind it betrays.

He is 41 years old, has brown hair and dark brown eyes, and is very familiar with Vancouver, having lived here for a number of years. He does not have a car in Vancouver, and is apparently not contacting his friends here, so is probably dependent on public transit. He has friends in the burlesque scene, but apparently hasn’t contacted any of them since the 14th. With hundreds of thousands of people in town for the Olympics, he could easily slip among the crowds, just another tourist.

He hasn’t posted any links to his Facebook profile since January, and the most recent activity on the eBay account he used is a testimonial from a buyer dated January 21. It appears he last signed in to YouTube four weeks ago, to upload a trailer for Run for Your Life, an independent film he was working on.

This is a web pilot I made a few years back with my old improv group. It spoofs spy shows like Alias and 24 with a dash of Sid & Marty Krofft.

His father, Walter Koenig, has reworked his own site and dedicated it to the search for his son. The below is from that site.

If you’ve seen Andrew since February 14th, contact Detective Raymond Payette of the Vancouver PD at 604-717-2534.

PLEASE COPY and RE-POST THE INFORMATION BELOW!!!:

Andrew Koenig, the son of Star Trek actor Walter Koenig, is missing.  The last time Andrew

Koenig was seen was on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Andrew Koenig never boarded his flight back to the US, and he hasn’t heard from since then.

He was last seen at a bakery in the Stanley Park area of Vancouver.

Andrew Koenig, 41, was working as a camera operator on the show “Never Not Funny” as well

as doing improv in Los Angeles. Best known as “Boner” from “Growing Pains”, Andrew also

had a role in “Deep Space Nine”, and is a talented actor director, editor and photographer as

well as a passionate activist.  In 2008, he  was arrested at the Rose Bowl while protesting

China’s part in the genocide in the country of Burma.

This is a serious matter that has Koenig’s friends and family gravely concerned. If you have

seen him, emailed him or had any contact after the 14th or spent time with him during his stay

in Vancouver please call Detective Raymond Payette of the Vancouver PD at 604-717-2534.

Please share this and send prayers and positive thoughts. If you wish to leave Walter a note,

USA hockey team shocks Canada

Yes, the costume  mountie hat above is a lot classier than the silly red, white and blue topper the American is wearing.

But what matters is the final score: USA 5, Canada 3.

Magnificent.

As I’ve noted before, I’m a big fan of Martin Brodeur. But he had an off night tonight against the Americans, letting in a first-minute goal and three more. To add to Canada’s frustrating loss, Team USA slipped in an open-net goal after Brodeur had skated off as the Canadians desperately tried to take the game into overtime.

Of this night, Ryan Miller will always be able to note proudly that he outplayed one of hockey’s legendary goalies. And he added his own chapter to the legends of American Olympic hockey.

Canada Beat Swiss! In Shootout?

By AJ Petronzi

In Play Magazine

Despite losing 3-1 to Team USA and being down two goals 35 seconds into the second period, the Swiss team forced Canada to an overtime, then a shootout before Sydney Crosby scored the game winner on his second shot in the shootout.

Canada lost a huge point tonight in having to go to extra time. With tonight’s win, they only have five points in the tournament bracket, while the USA has six points and it’s likely that Russia will move out to six tonight also. Canada will have to beat the USA on Sunday if they plan on being a top four seed going into the medal round.

Slovakia lost 1-3 to the Czech Republic last night and tonight must face the Russian team which is a heavy favorite to walk away with either a gold or silver medal. An update about that game will come later.

Summerland, BC, Canada

There has been so much to celebrate this past weekend, Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, and of course, the Olympics.  We live about 4 hours away from Vancouver.  We were thinking about going and just joining the crowd but instead, we decided to have a quiet weekend and spend it in Summerland, BC.  Some of the Olympic teams from all over the world practiced at our ski hills for the Olympics and the comments about the Okanagan were all positive.  Some said that the Okanagan was the most beautiful place on earth.  Here are some more pics I took this weekend:

The 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th

Have you seen the photos of the “2001 September 11th attacks” on the World Trade Center towers in New York City that were recently made public?

These photos were taken by New York Police Officers who were on the scene in a police helicopter.

Here are some of the photos they took:

The 2010 Winter Olympics will take place in Vancouver, Canada.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin on Friday, 2010 February 12th in the evening…Canada time. So, it’ll be Saturday, 2010 February 13th here in Japan when the ceremony begins.

The official 2010 Olympics logo.

The games will go from 2010 February 12-28 (Canada time).

Do you watch the Olympics?

I watch them…but the games go for over two weeks—I don’t watch everyday of the games. I like to watch some of the opening ceremony and some of the closing ceremony and a few games in between.

This year, Japan is sending 95 athletes to compete in the Olympics, America is sending 216, and Canada (the host country) will have 206 athletes play.

How many athletes from your country will be at the 2010 Olympics?

++++++++++++++

Sunday, February 14th will be Valentine’s Day.

How is Valentine’s Day celebrated in your country?

In Japan, it’s done the opposite of how America celebrates it. And Japan has another holiday (called “White Day“) in March that is more similar to Western-style Valentine’s.

Click here to read my FAQ about Valentine’s Day in Japan…

and click here to read my post that explains Japanese Valentine’s (and other holidays in February) in more detail.

Also, this year on February 14 will be the Chinese New Years.

I mentioned it on my site’s “Festivals In Tokyo” page….click here> to read it.

Have you ever experienced a Chinese New Years ceremony?

If you’re in the Tokyo area this weekend, you can go to 「横浜中華街」 (“Yokohama China Town“) and see a Chinese New Years ceremony.

Christian churches in Canada fading out: USA next?

Olympics fans heading to Vancouver might want to visit a vanishing cultural treasure while they’re in Canada — local churches.

Canada has become a “post-Christian society” where once-dominant Anglicanism has “moved to the margins of public life,” according to a bleak study reported by Michael Valpy at the Globe and Mail.

A new assessment of the state of the church in Canada looks at the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia and then across the country and concludes that,… at the present rate of decline — a loss of 13,000 members per year — only one Anglican would be left in Canada by 2061.

… Nationally, between 1961 and 2001, the church lost 53 per cent of its membership, declining to 642,000 from 1.36 million. Between 1991 and 2001 alone, it declined by 20 per cent.

The report zeros in on Vancouver and the adjacent Gulf Islands, suggesting closing or preparing to shutter nearly two in three of its Anglican churches now that the Anglican population is… one generation away from extinction … The unchurched are not coming to us.

Only the Roman Catholic Church is holding steady and the report attributes that to immigration.

Religious studies professor David Seljak of St. Jerome’s University in Waterloo, Ont., observes that “Canadians increasingly say they’re generically “Christian” rather than Anglican, Presbyterian or Pentecostal.”

Gee, where have we heard this before?

Surveys in the USA aren’t nearly so grim — yet. But, in the American Religious Identification Survey’s three studies over two decades, there’s clear evidence of a shift from denominational ties to generic Christian ties — or out the church doors altogether. The ARIS co-author Barry Kosmin said,

More than ever before, people are just making up their own stories of who they are. They say, “I’m everything. I’m nothing. I believe in myself.”

A pastor once told me that he wanted his church’s neighbors, even if they never entered the doors, to say, “We’re glad you’re here.”

When happens if — or when — they’re not? Would you miss your neighboring churches, even if you don’t attend?

Faith and the Law Note: Our churches need to remain strong and strengthen their relationship with GOd and reach out to others with the gospel of Jesus Christ. There are going to be alot of disappointed and bitter souls if they try to find the answer to life in themselves.

The Olympics and Free Speech

The Olympics were political in Berlin, in Helsinki, in Mexico City, Moscow and Los Angeles. They were political in Beijing. And they will be political in Vancouver.

How could they be otherwise? For a few days, the entire world’s attention focuses on one city, one governing power, one culture. Why should it surprise us that an event like that will invite the crazies?

Article 51 of the Olympic Charter prohibits “political, religious or racial propaganda” in Olympic venues or other areas, but who are they trying to kid?

Protest has been an important part of the Olympics since at least the 1930s. From boycotting the entire two weeks, to getting arrested for unfurling a “Free Tibet” banner on the Great Wall, to killing Israeli athletes. Bringing politics into such a staged event can be easy with a little creativity.

In Beijing, protesters were given three zones in which they could practice ”freedom of speech.” But the zones were a long way from any of the Olympic events, and to access them for purpose of protest you had to get a permit from the government. Needless to say, such permits are hard to come by in China.

In the meantime, China silenced dissidents by jailing their leaders, including house church pastors and political organizers. They forbid visitors from bringing any printed material, film or other media that could be ”detrimental to China’s politics, economy, culture and ethics.”

Leading up to the Beijing Games, protests occurred all over the world against China’s policies regarding Tibet, Sudan, North Korea, Burma, and the country’s treatment of journalists, ministers and social activists.

In Seoul in 1987, such demonstrations led to the overthrowing of a regime and freedom for an entire people. In Beijing, the results may amount to much less.

Vancouver has found some clever ways for dealing with protest. British Columbia’s Bill 13 allows authorities to enter residences and other private property without the owner’s consent to remove or cover up signs they deem critical of the Olympics, as long as residents get 24 hours notice and enter “reasonably.” That would make for an interesting phone call:

“Excuse me, is this Jenny Smith? Hi, Jenny. This is the police. We just wanted to let you know that in 24 hours we will be breaking into your house to remove your personal property. Don’t worry, we’ll be entering your home and stealing your belongings in a reasonable manner.”

The decision has, quite obviously, been met with much criticism from civil liberties groups.

Vancouver’s Olympic Committee has named their Olympic motto “with glowing hearts,” a name taken from “O Canada,” the country’s national anthem. The lyrics are in the public domain, so unlike the usual Olympic motto, Vancouver’s can’t be trademarked. They have instead trademarked words like “winter” and “gold” in relation to the term “glowing hearts.”

This has allowed them the ability to take small businesses to court that have been around for decades for breaking trademark laws. If your grandpa’s 40-year-old shop is called Glowing Hearts Gold Jewelry, or Glowing Hearts Winter Gear, you might be visiting ole poppy in the slammer.

Other lyrics from “O Canada” include “the true North strong and free!” and “God keep our land glorious and free!”

The idea behind these measures, of course, is that we should be focusing on the sports, and not on politics. But for the men and women whose homes have been entered without their consent, and for the small family businesses facing a huge corporation in court, these measures are at their very heart a political act.

What do you think about Vancouver’s rules?

Can banning protest and propaganda at a global sports event also be a political act?

Further resources:

Bill 13 includes many other measures. The one I refer to in this article is found under the Municipalities Enabling and Validating Act, Part 9, Section 32.

Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will is the most famous political propaganda related to the Olympics. Filmed at Hitler’s behest around the Berlin Games of 1936, it is considered a landmark film with a chilling, Nazi-approved message. I found it captivating, and I’m from a Jewish family, so watch it at your own risk.

Lastly, read Wikipedia’s article on one famous Olympics protest that ended in tragedy: the Tlatelolco Massacre in Mexico City. The people there chanted what many others have since, though perhaps in spirit - “We don’t want the Olympics, we want revolution!”
